Pointe Noire, which lies near the present-day community of Richard, was named for a point of woods that looks dark or black when viewed from the north, near the site of an old forge. "The area had a reputation for some terrible knife fights in the old days; it was the sort of place where you visit only if you were invited. This area produced many fine musicians."
